Story
SCP-087 is an anomaly in the form of a staircase located behind an ordinary door inside a university building. At first glance, the entrance appears completely normal, but any exploration quickly reveals impossible properties.
The staircase descends endlessly in a continuous spiral and appears to have no known endpoint. Despite numerous expeditions conducted by the SCP Foundation, no one has ever reached the bottom.
The interior of SCP-087 is shrouded in near-total darkness. Even the most powerful light sources fail to illuminate more than a few meters ahead, as if the darkness itself absorbs light.
During explorations, subjects frequently report hearing the sound of a child crying somewhere below. These sobs always seem to originate several floors deeper, regardless of how far the explorers descend. Despite repeated attempts, the source of the cries has never been located.
Exploration teams have also encountered an entity designated SCP-087-1. This apparition appears as a pale, distorted face with eyes and a mouth lacking recognizable human features. Psychological reactions to its presence are extremely severe and often include panic, paranoia, and episodes of overwhelming terror.
Individuals who descend too deeply into SCP-087 frequently develop long-lasting psychological trauma. Several explorers have refused to continue their missions after reporting movements, voices, or unseen presences lurking within the darkness.
Due to the extreme risks associated with exploration, research involving SCP-087 has been heavily restricted by the SCP Foundation. To this day, nobody knows how far SCP-087 truly extends or what may exist at its deepest levels.
Credits and origin
SCP-087 is one of the SCP Foundation's most famous anomalies thanks to its oppressive atmosphere and its embodiment of the fear of the unknown.
The original article left a lasting impact on the community by drawing on several universal fears: darkness, confined spaces, endless depths, and the feeling of being watched by something unseen.
The popularity of SCP-087 led to the creation of several independent video games, including SCP-087-B, which helped introduce the SCP universe to a wider audience.
